Meat - Lower demand presses down beef prices

By Artur em 23/06/2009 :: Talk wiht us

In the first fortnight of June, lower supply (few animals available to trade) of fed cattle along with selling restraint in Brazil reduced pressure over arroba (15 kilos) quotations. In this period is expected that farmers be willing to trade once the winter reduces significantly the pasture production.

In São Paulo state, slaughterhouses were hesitant about purchasing. In the wholesale market of São Paulo city, beef prices dropped down again, pressed by lower demand. Between May 29 and June 15, the ESALQ/BM&FBovespa Index for fed cattle (São Paulo state) decreased 2.56 percent, closing at 80.5 reais or 40.92 dollars per arroba (15 kilos) on June 15.

As for wholesale beef market (São Paulo capital), in the first fortnight of June, prices of steer carcass decreased 2.2 percent, to 4.90 reais or 2.49 dollars per kilo on June 15. Hindquarter prices dropped 2.36 percent, at 5.80 reais or 2.94 dollars per kilo in the same period. Forequarter prices downed 1.65 percent, closing at 4.16 reais or 2.11 dollars per kilo on June 15. The thin flank prices devaluated 2.8 percent, at 3.80 reais or 1.93 dollars.

Regarding hog wholesale market of São Paulo capital, the carcass jumped expressively 34.03 percent between May 29 and June 15, at 3.96 reais or 2.01 dollars per kilo on June 15. The hog especial carcass increased 35.34 percent, at 4.30 reais or 2.18 dollars in the same period. The impulse came from Russia announce that they will restart buying swine meat from Santa Catarina state (Brazilian Southern region) and also from lower supply in some regions.

Concerning poultry, the frozen meat upped 5.60 percent in the first fortnight of June, closing at 2.95 reais or 1.49 dollar on June 15. For chilled meat, increase was 6.59 percent in reais, closing at 2.81 reais or 1.42 dollar on June 15 (both in the wholesale market of São Paulo capital – the most important Brazilian consumer reference). Also to this sector, the smaller production is the drive to upward bias.
